| Located in the Saratoga hills,
Villa Montalvo is a historic landmark
built in 1912. Montolvo is California’s historic
estate for the arts. It is twenty short minutes from the
heart of Silicon Valley and an hour south of San Francisco.
Montalvo includes two theaters, an art gallery, the
historic Villa Montalvo, an artist residency complex,
hiking trails, and gardens.
This 175-acre park was a gift from California Senator
James Phelan to the citizens of California. At his death,
Senator Phelan was explicit in his bequest of Villa
Montalvo. "I would like the property at Saratoga,
California, known as Villa Montalvo, to be maintained
as a public park open under reasonable restrictions,
the buildings and grounds immediately surrounding the
same to be used as far as possible for the development
of art, literature, music, and architecture by promising
students."
The San Francisco Art Association assumed trusteeship
of Villa Montalvo in 1930.
The Villa re-opened to the public as an art center in
1939.
A shift in priorities for the San Francisco Art Association
following World War II left many of the local citizens
concerned about the future of Villa Montalvo. The Montolvo
Association was formed. In October 1953 trusteeship
of the villa was turned over to the Montolvo Association
which is where it remains today.
